Finite Element Modeling of a frontal crash between VAZ-21093 and ZIL-433362 vehicles

One of the most dangerous type of vehicle crash is a frontal crash. The most serious consequences for a passenger car can happen when it crashes into a freight vehicle. The results of the Finite Element (FE) modeling of a VAZ-21093 vehicle crash test, when it hits a special deformed barrier at a speed of 64 kmph, are presented in "Projects".

The modeling of the frontal crash between a VAZ-21093 vehicle and a ZIL-433362 truck was done by CompMechLab egineers. The passenger vehicle's speed was taken as 64 kmph, while the truck's one as 30 kmph.

The research was done within the frames of the project of the above-mentioned vehicles crash reconstruction. The developed FE vehicles models can be used in crash modeling of any complexity in order to determine velocities and trajectories of vehicles by their finite state. The models consider a radiator, an engine, front and rear suspensions, a brake system, cars wheels with a glance to tyre pressure and many other details with an ability of contact interaction and non-linear material properties. The VAZ-21093 vehicle model is verified by a real EuroNCAP crash test. Mass and inertia properties of the vehicles correspond to real prototypes.

A frontal vehicles crash simulation - a non-linear dynamic problem of impact interaction - was solved using FE analysis software Simulia Abaqus. The friction between asphalt and the vehicles tyres is considered in the model for more real simulation of the vehicles behavior after the crash. The results of the crash FE modeling can be viewed in the animation format (click to view animation).
